How Do Ear Candles Work

So, how do ear candles work? Well, they work like a chimney on a building, working through a process called convection. Wikipedia gives the definition of convection as this .  “The movement caused by the tendency of hotter and therefore less dense material to rise, and colder, denser material to sink under the influence of gravity, which consequently results in transfer of heat”This process draws the impurities up through the candle to the top.

The convection also causes a mild suction within the ear. This coupled with the warmth from the candle and the vapours (camomile etc), gently massages the eardrum. This gentle massage causes any pressure build up in the head to be regulated thereby relieving the sinuses. This also helps in other ways too…

  • the herbal vapours soothe the outer ear and also strengthen the immune system
  • the warmth helps stimulate the blood flow. This strengthens the lymph glands and thereby stimulates the energy points on the outer ear.

The person having the treatment should experience a pleasurable crackling or hissing noise in their ear. This is just the sound of the flame. It is very relaxing believe me!

Ear candles work best when the candle is held correctly with a good seal around the base. This allows the vapours to travel up the inside of the candle and not out through the bottom or into the eardrum.

The ear candle does NOT actually remove the ear wax – this is a misconception!

It purely loosens it and the ear wax then comes out easier and naturally over the following days after a treatment. The residue that is often found in the candle is therefore NOT ear wax but purely wax from the candle.

The length of time an ear candle burns says a lot about the possible extent of any problems you may have in your ear. The usual burn time of an ear candle is between 10-15 minutes. The longer the candle burns the worse the potential problem could be. The colour of the smoke also has a bearing on it too. If the smoke is a dark colour then this could indicate a problem. A good healthy sign is when the smoke is light grey, light blue or if there is no smoke at all.

If you feel a blocked sensation during the treatment this is usually due to the vapours and will pass shortly after the treatment ends.

If the blocked sensation occurs afterwards this usually shows that the candling process has caused the build up of ear wax to loosen. This should be alleviated as the ear wax comes out naturally.
